If you watched my appearance on Good Day Sacramento in its entirety, you heard that I dropped a bit of new information while answering my final question: I plan to audition for the Sacramento Kings Dance Team next month! If you’ve only met me in the last few years, this probably doesn’t seem as reasonable to you as if you’ve known me a bit longer and know more about my dance background.

I was on the dance and cheer teams throughout middle and high school. I cheered competitively in college before receiving my minor in Dance from UC San Diego. As an adult, I’ve danced professionally for the Sacramento Mountain Lions football team and California Eagles indoor football team. The Ms. Vacaville thing worked out pretty well, so hear me out on my next idea…

Recently, I’ve recognized that I’ve built my career at the expense of many of my hobbies. Hobbies serve a valuable purpose in stress relief and as a creative outlet. It’s safe to say that the type-A, analytical portion of my

personality dominates, but I’m one of those few people capable of using both sides of my brain. On the more creative side, I’ve also played violin, trumpet, and danced most of my life. I should say until the corporate jet-setter lifestyle started several years ago…

When you travel for business, you bring your laptop bag (which will double as your purse) and your carry-on suitcase. It’s a rookie move to check a bag, unless you happen to be staying more than a few days which is rare in business. This leaves no room to bring an instrument and hotel rooms are not exactly conducive to dancing. For these practical reasons, music and dance largely exited my life.

In making more positive and conscious lifestyle choices, I’ve recognized a need to revive these hobbies and passions. What better way to do this than for a team, in a community I love?! Hence the goal to become a Sacramento Kings Dancer!

In addition, the Sacramento Kings expect their dancers to serve as brand ambassadors and representatives in the community. In this capacity, I have stand-out qualifications due to my professional career in management consulting, significant charitable work, and public speaking skills. Fingers crossed that solid dance skills coupled with *outstanding* brand ambassador skills will be a winning combination for me!

Let me not misrepresent the challenge of this next task. Successfully auditioning for a professional dance team is a multi-part process with tons of qualified ladies interested in the role. It’s also been about six years since I’ve danced professionally and three since I’ve had cancer in my life adding more pokes, prods, surgeries, and treatments than I care to count. This will not be easy, but I do believe it is possible. Dancing is a bit like riding a bike – you get rusty, but you don’t forget. Also, if you haven’t noticed yet I’m a “Go Big or Go Home” type of girl. Therefore, while I understand the difficulty of this next task I plan to give it all I’ve got and I’ve already got a plan in motion. Fortune favors the prepared mind!

I’m about 5 weeks out from auditions currently. The areas I need to focus on are my technical dance ability and my look for audition day. Audition outfit options have been ordered, as well as rhinestones for the mandatory bedazzling to follow. I’ve begun updates to my garage so it can double as a dance studio for practicing. If anyone has a hand to lend painting this week, I could really use some help. Please shoot me a note if you have some time to assist. I pay well in food, alcohol, and free practice space once it’s finished 🙂 Finally, I plan to attend classes at FemDance for the next few weeks. The ladies behind this dance studio are former teammates of mine and current Sacramento Kings Dancers. I can definitely use their pointers and it will be nice to catch up, as well.

So there’s my goal and my plan to accomplish it. Wish me luck and I’ll keep you updated as we count down to auditions on July 17!
